Instagram drives me crazy! How about you? I can post a reel and it does AMAZING! The next day I can post one and it completely flops. So, I’ve been doing some testing and experimenting on my own senior photography instagram account and wanted to pass along what I’ve learned.

If your Instagram reach is down just know that you are not the only photographer out there that struggles with this problem. This is pretty common when Instagram rolls out new features and their algorithm changes.

First of all, what is Instagram reach? Well, simply put your “reach” number is an estimated number of people who have seen a post, story or reel. Easy, right?

Now, why is this number important? Because the more people you reach with your content, the better chances of building your audience. The larger your audience (of ideal clients) the better chances of engagement (likes, comments, saves, shares, etc). Engagement is important because now those people are moving closer to doing business with you. The more you can keep them warmed up & engaged, the better chances they have of inquiring about a session. Anddddd the more people who inquire, the more opportunities to fill your calendar with those beautiful senior sessions.

Here’s 4 things to do to increase your Instagram reach:

INTERACTIVE STORIES - Reels are obviously what Instagram wants us to be doing right now, but stories are still so important for our instagram accounts. And the more interactive you can make them, the better. Using polls to make it super easy for your audience to engage with you is your best bet here. When you get more engagement, Instagram will ultimately show your content to more people.

AUDIT YOUR LAST 5 POSTS - If you're in a rut with your stories, posts or reels, shake things up and post something new and different to get your audience's attention again. Sometimes a little shock factor is all you need to get them to start engaging again. If you can see of trend of what has been working, do more of that too.

GIVE THE ENGAGEMENT YOU WANT TO RECEIVE - If they aren't commenting, it's most likely because you haven't been either. Set a timer for 10 minutes and leave as many genuine comments on posts and stories as you can in that time! When you make those connections & get those comments, Instagram will gladly increase your reach. This platform loves when you are active!

POST WHEN YOUR AUDIENCE IS MOST LIKELY TO BE ON THEIR PHONES - This is really important for getting good reach. When your post, story or reels gets some good traffic right when it is posted, it has a higher likelihood of Instagram pushing it out to more people. So try to pay attention to your analytics for the best times to post & even ask your audience when they are on Instagram the most. Try a poll. See what I did there? ;)
