107: How To Stop People Pleasing In Your Business

Welcome back to the podcast!  I am really glad that you are here.  I know this is a busy time of year, so just know that I appreciate you giving me a few minutes of your day.



Today’s podcast is going to be a mixed bag of content.



First, I want to say thank you.  Thank you to my current clients, whether you are a 1:1 client or in Boss Lady Breakthroughs or inside Studio Secrets.  I am forever grateful for you for trusting me with your business and letting me be part of your world.  



My coaching clients aren’t just clients.  We become family and friends, especially the ones inside the Studio Secrets community.  We share so much - Lakendra’s husband is coming home from a long span of being away in the military, Kelli’s college kids are coming home for break, Tim had a health scare this year & we rallied around him this year.  There are so many life things that happen.  It’s not just business in that room.  Most of it is, but I just love that we open up to each other & build each other up.  



Here’s what I really love.  Me being with a client for an entire year, sometimes 2 and 3 years, really allows me to get to know them on such a personal level that I can coach them individually instead of generically.  What I know would work for Aileen won’t work for Amanda.  What works for a stay at home mom vs a mom with a 9 to 5 trying to get her photography business off the ground is very different.



So I’m just crazy grateful to get to know my clients so well & to be part of their lives.  You guys are awesome!

Ok, I’m changing topics to one that has come up a lot lately in conversations - people pleasing.



Did you just turn the volume up or down?  Are you like “gosh, I really need to hear this” or “I really don’t want to hear this right now”.  Either way, stay with me!  I’ll keep this short and sweet for you.



People pleasing is when you have this strong urge to please others, even if it’s at your own expense.  This could be with family, with friends, with someone you don’t even know like a waitress, a sales associate, a telemarketer.  I saw my mom do this when we were at the mall.  She literally stopped & listened to someone try to sell her something for over 10 minutes just because they made eye contact with her!  She never would have walked into a store looking for this item, but she “didn’t want to hurt his feelings”.  Those were her own words.  She gave up 10 minutes of her life on something she could care less about!  



Where I see this come up the most is with my photographers who give and give to their clients - whether that’s with time or lost sales or a number of other things.  Now I’m not saying we shouldn’t give.  Having a generous heart is one thing.  Giving from a place of “they won’t like me if I don’t” is totally different!  



Or maybe you’re afraid of what others might be thinking.  That’s people-pleasing too.  



So here are some signs:



  • You change yourself based on who you are around.

  • You apologize - for what you like, your choices, who you are, what you need

  • You are indecisive

  • You don’t know how to say “no”

  • You tend to be a perfectionist

  • You don’t set boundaries

  • You shrink or minimize yourself and your accomplishments





So why do we people please anyway?  What makes us do the things we do?  Simply put - it’s a lack of self esteem.  Ouch!  Don’t say that.  Right?  But it’s true.  That sort of behavior is generally because you don’t value your own needs and desires.  You need that external validation.  And when you do something that someone else wants you to do, you get that sense of approval and acceptance from that person.



Where does people-pleasing come from?



Most likely it comes from how you related to your parents growing up.  Before we go blaming our parents for everything, hey, they did the best they could!  And so are you!  But we can grow, learn & hopefully do better by our own kids.



A child who had to parent-please, wants love and affection, like any child does.  He / she learns how to adapt their behavior to meet their parents’ needs. And over time, that child learns to ignore their own needs and feelings in an effort to keep their greatest needs in tact - love, connection, approval, acceptance.



It’s a learned behavior, but it is possible to overcome people-pleasing.  



I want you to try these 5 things.



  • Practice saying “no”

  • Put time limits on yourself when helping others

  • Stop apologizing (save those for when you’ve really done something wrong, not because of who you are or what you want)

  • Schedule time for yourself & stick to it

  • Pause before making a decision



This applies in any area of your life and business.  And if you get good at these things in your personal life, it will spill over into your business.



You might even get a chance to practice some of these over Thanksgiving break with family.  Ok, you might get a lot of chances to practice!  Haha!



Mostly today, I want to encourage you.  This happens to all of us, myself included.  I think the best thing you can do is pause and start to become more aware of when this is happening.  That’s when things will begin to change.  It’s ok to put yourself first.
